Consumers cautious but they still have drive; confidence is down, yet strong brands are a comfort and the car has not lost its appeal
Article Abstract:
Australia's consumer spending trends reflect a degree of uncertainty in the country's economic outlook. The Asian economic crisis, the declining Australian dollar, the emergence of the One Nation party's influence, and fear of unemployment and a possible consumption tax are economic realities that have hindered spending. Some industries have escaped this concern; consumers still use telecommunications services and automobiles. During the first six months of 1998, car sales increased 15.7% with purchases of 63,000 new passenger automobiles.
