Article Abstract:

Spending habits of Australian consumers are discussed. Australians have been spending far more than they earn as can be seen from the past and present trends. While the bulk of the debt is on real estate mortgages, the real challenge for Australians will be servicing these debts under inflationary conditions. The relevant statistics for analyzing the situation are presented.

The sick are reviving

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of the reforms to the economies of Japan and Germany are discussed. The reforms implemented in 1990 to issues like lifetime employment, foreign competition promotion, credit control and lending practices are all bearing fruits. The two economies are now on the way of revival.

The short-term measures by Prime Minister John Howard to boost GDP are unlikely to result in long-term economic benefits for Australia. The fall in savings rate and the rising national and household debt are discussed in detail.
