Demand elasticities in international marketing: a meta-analytical application to tourism

Article Abstract:

The demand elasticities in the international marketing of travel and tourism are examined through a literature review of 77 empirical studies. Results across studies were compared to determine where they were different and similar. Income and price are found to explain the demand for international tourism in most of the studies although variations across studies are observed. Meta-analysis shows that a substantial part of the variation is the result of study artifacts, which are most notably sampling errors.

Vacations and the quality of life: patterns and structures

Article Abstract:

The vital role that tourism plays as a quality of life (QOL) indicator is reflected in rising levels of vacation travel for developed countries. Differences on how tourism consumption is regarded as a social and economic benefit are observed between European countries on the one hand and the US and Japan on the other. However, growing market liberalization is increasingly narrowing the international distinction between time and money factors that define vacations and QOL.

Tourism, competitiveness, and societal prosperity

Article Abstract:

Societal prosperity is associated with how well society can maximize the well-being and quality of life of its members. In terms of economic factors, tourism has the potential to boost a society's development, since development of the industry will also require the community's development. This relationship between societal prosperity and tourism development can be defined by an economic competitiveness model.
