Egypt: attack on Greek tourists kills 18

The Islamic militant group Gamaa al-Islamiya claimed responsibility for the killing of 17 Greek tourists and a hotel attendant outside a hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The attack reportedly had been planned against Israelis to protest recent military attacks on Lebanon. The Greeks may have been killed by mistake.

Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party won a large majority although the mostly Islamic opposition claimed the election was fraudulent. The election was held amid an atmosphere of renewed Islamic political violence and a government crackdown on extremist groups.

Egyptian police Mar 9-10, 1993, raided the homes of alleged Islamic militants. At least 19 people died during the raids, including 14 militants, 3 police officers and the wife and child of a militant.
