Government cracks down on Shiite unrest

Article Abstract:

Bahraini authorities arrested 41 Shiite dissidents on Feb 2, 1996, and charged them with rioting and sabotage. Sheik Abdul Amir al-Jamri was among those arrested. The dissidents are seeking better conditions for the majority Shiites and a restoration of Parliament and free speech.

Hunger strike sparks Palestinian unrest

Article Abstract:

Public unrest in Israel and the Israeli-occupied territories Oct 7-18, 1992, was caused by a hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners. The violence was the worst in Israel in two years, and represented a setback for the peace talks in Washington, DC.

Unrest greets emergency rule

Article Abstract:

Security forces in Algeria took stronger actions against Islamic fundamentalists after the government declared emergency rule on Feb 9, 1992. The Islamic Salvation Front claimed that 30,000 people were arrested and 150 were killed in Feb 1992.
