Heavy hitters to oversee e-trade

Article Abstract:

An Australian government panel, led by the Minister of Financial Services and Regulation Joe Hockey, has been established to monitor electronic commerce and advise on regulatory guidelines. Hockey says a dispute-resolution process designed in concert with the electronic commerce industry would be a big step in developing e-commerce in Australia. Also, a professional code of conduct could work as a form of branding. Worldwide, governments have yet to develop any international standards for electronic commerce.

Intranets boost sales of financial services

Australian companies such as AdvantEdge are using corporate intranets, big corporate closed-circuit online networks used for staff communication, as a medium for selling their financial products. AdvantEdge uses the intranets of corporations such as Chase Manhattan and IBM to sell their benefits packages.

A new Government agency, the Australian Centre for Global Finance, is setting up a portal, a complicated Web site where financial transactions can be initiated, in order to support Australia's financial services industry.
