'Heroic leadership' - a self-defeating cycle

Article Abstract:

D. Bradford and A. Cohen have identified a perception of leadership which they describe as heroic leadership. This describes the sort of leader who is expected to know everything, be able to solve any problem, and be in total control of all systems for which they have some responsibility. These authors say that the system which supports this sort of leadership is self-destructive as the leader has inadequate resources to fulfil all expectations. They put forward an alternative model of leadership yet heroic leadership is both sought and helpful in some circumstances.

Poems from the front line

Article Abstract:

Collaborative poetry-making can play a valuable role in helping managers to analyze their responses to significant change. Poetry allows strong feelings to be expressed, and this in turn can make managers more willing to take part in the change process. Collaborative poetry-making acts in a cathartic way, allowing managers to acknowledge and come to terms with their feelings. It must be carefully managed, as it may involve dealing with very painful experiences.
