'How do I survive office politics?' (Managing Your Career) (Column)
Article Abstract:
Office politics is a regular part of any business setting. It does not always have to be considered counterproductive since politics, in its purest form, is nothing more than just an exercise in influencing the opinion and behavior of other people by engaging in such interpersonal activities as persuasion, communication and cajoling. In this sense, it is necessary for managers to become office politicians. Apart from being able to generate ideas, business leaders must also have the ability to rally the support of other people for these ideas. Office politics can serve to further the goals of work teams, as well as those of the organization.

'How can I speak without nervousness?' (Managing Your Career) (Column)
Article Abstract:
Confidence-building techniques that can aid people who are apprehensive about delivering a speech include remembering that most audiences want a speaker to succeed, avoiding ill-timed attempts at humor and understanding the audience's special concerns. Other techniques that a speaker can adopt to help improve the effectiveness of a speech are to focus on a few major points, review a speech until it becomes second nature, rehearse the delivery of the speech, and avoid overdependence on visual aids. Investing some time in a professional public speaking course would also be a wise idea.
