How to Run a Country
Article Abstract:
William Ouchi wrote Theory Z, a book which teaches American businesses how to pattern themselves after the very successful Japanese businesses. Now he has come out with a new book called 'The M-Form Society: How American Teamwork Can Capture the Competitive Edge' in which he states that cooperation is essential for the common good although this is something that Americans do not do very well. The M-Form refers to multidivisional, in which parts of a company or a country are semi independent but work together for the good of all. Although Ouchi's theory may be sound, some of the specifics may cause problems in the United States. Measures such as restricting equity capital to large stable companies, and letting banks decide who should or should not get venture capital probably would not set well with most American business people.

Bill Nourse of Brookemeade Hardware & Supply: The Nuts and Bolts of Politics
Article Abstract:
Planning for the White House Conference on Small Business in 1980 changed Bill Nourse from a father of five and a man who owned and ran his own moderately successful hardware store, into a politically active champion for the rights of small business owners. Attending a meeting in 1979, Nourse began to awaken to the lack of organization, and the potential impact that small business people could have upon the political process. Even Nourse himself is amazed at how politically active he has become, and is awed by a system that lets a man with only two or three employees participate so fully in the political process. He likes getting things done, and has been instrumental in legislation at both the state and federal levels. He likes making things happen, and plans to stay politically active for a long time.
