Insider-trading case sparks a debate on methods

Article Abstract:

The eight-week insider-trading trial of former Macquarie Corporate Finance employee Simon Hannes has led to a debate over where such cases should be tried and how best to protect the integrity of the securities industry. Alan Cameron, chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), believes that relegating a case to anywhere but a criminal court would suggest insider trading is not a serious crime. Hannes' conviction by circumstantial evidence has also lead to debate about jury level of proof.
