Liggett settles suits, breaking ranks

The Liggett Group Inc announced on Mar 13, 1996, that it had settled its part of a landmark class action suit filed on the behalf of smokers. Liggett agreed to contribute up to $50 million per year towards smoke cessation programs. The firm also reached settlements with five states.

Employee benefit suits permitted
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruled in Varity Corp v. Howe that employees can individually sue their employers for taking away benefits in a deceptive manner. The case began when employees who transferred to a financially-ill subsidiary of Varity lost their benefits when it closed.
