Major cautious on European currency

UK Prime Minister John Major has pledged that the UK will not support a proposed single currency for European Union members prior to 1997. The move was interpreted as an attempt to consolidate support within his Conservative Party after internal debates arose over the UK's withdrawal from the exchange-rate mechanism.

French voters narrowly back 'Maastricht' treaty on closer European unity

Voters in France gave their approval by 51.05% to 48.95% to the Treaty on European Union of the European Community on Sep 20, 1992. Greece, Luxembourg and Ireland already have ratified the treaty.
