Management under fire: the transformation of managers in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

The corporate environment for business managers in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union has dramatically changed since summer 1989, with the economy transformed from being centrally-planned and static to being market-driven and unpredictable. The managers of the former state enterprises now have to operate in a highly competitive market. The managers had to change their attitudes to central planning, human resource management, product quality and product pricing. The transformation of corporate management in Russia, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia is examined.

Managing strategic consensus: the foundation of effective implementation

Article Abstract:

Senior executives often complain that it is easy to decide on a strategy, but difficult to get middle managers to implement the strategy. This is due largely to middle managers' lack of understanding and commitment to strategy, with operating- and middle-level managers often ill-informed on a strategy or in disagreement with it. A successful implementation of a strategy depends on there being a common commitment and a common set of strategic priorities, that is a strategic consensus. This involves two steps: improving understanding and enhancing commitment.
