Meat workers prepare for war

Article Abstract:

A changing beef industry, the quick growth of Asian markets, and operating costs all contributed to meat exporter G&K O'Connor's lockout of meat workers. The lockout has prompted the Australasian Meat Industry and Employees Union to fear industry-wide 15% wage reductions. Partner in G&K Kevin O'Connor cites Japan's consumption of pork, rather than beef, as a major crisis. At a $30-a-head disadvantage to most of his competitors, O'Connor's annual production of 150,000 cattle costs him $4.5 million a year.
