Microsoft to invest $135 million in Corel

Article Abstract:

Microsoft will buy 24 mil nonvoting preferred shares of Corel for $5.63 per share. The investment is convertable to a 25% stake in Corel. The agreement also calls for the resolution of lawsuits between the companies. In addition, Corel will participate in Microsoft's .NET initiative, an ASP plan. Corel's WordPerfect software competes against Microsoft Word, but Microsoft has the dominant market share. Some observers link Microsoft's propping up of a sagging competitor with the software giant's antitrust appeal, a connection Microsoft denies.
