Article Abstract:

Interest rates have had a negative effect on real estate investment trust (REIT) stock prices in 1999 and REITs are seen by some as high risk as domestic real estate in the US has less appeal as an asset. Several REIT sectors have good growth potential, but most are down for the year to date in 1999 and reasonable credit terms may become more difficult if interest rates take a negative tu rn. Weingarten Realty and New Plan Excel Realty offer the best opportunities for investors in late 1999.
