The Palestine Liberation Organization retracted key provisions in its charter about its recognition of Israel as part of the ongoing peace process in the Middle East. The act is expected to improve the chances that Shimon Peres will be elected in May 1996, as well as relations with Palestinians.

Israeli-PLO talks deadlocked over Hebron settlers

Talks between PLO leader Yasir Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres reached an impasse on Sep 8, 1995, over the issue of how to protect Israeli settlers in Hebron. Israel is reluctant to remove its troops and expand West Bank autonomy until the settlers' safety is guaranteed.

Israel, PLO reach accord on West Bank pullout, voting

Article Abstract:

PLO leader Yasir Arafat and Israel Foreign Minister Shimon Peres reached a tentative accord on Jul 4, 1995, regarding the West Bank. Israel agreed to withdraw its soldiers and allow elections and Palestinian self-rule to proceed. The accord is scheduled to be signed on July 25, 1995.
