Popular Party's Aznar voted premier

Jose Maria Aznar was sworn in as Spain's new prime minister on May 5, 1996. Aznar, leader of the center-right Popular Party, negotiated with the Catalan nationalist party, Convergencia i Unio, to obtain a vote majority in Spain's parliament. Aznar promised to cut Spain's unemployment rate.

Court rules against Gonzalez probe

The Spanish Supreme Court ruled on Sep 7, 1995, that Premier Felipe Gonzalez could not be called to testify in an investigation into the activities of the Antiterrorist Liberation Group. The Group allegedly killed 27 Basque separatists during the 1980s.
