Pope John Paul II tours Central America and Venezuela: urges progress on social issues

Article Abstract:

Pope John Paul II visited Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Venezuela from Feb 5-11, 1996. It was his first visit to Central America since 1983, and many saw the visit as an attempt to heal the rifts over liberation theology. The Pope discussed human rights, poverty and other social issues.

Pope tours Asia, Australia

Pope John Paul II visited the nations of Australia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka from Jan 11-21, 1995, in an effort to expand the Catholic Church's base in Asia. In Sri Lank, monks protested the Pope's disparaging remarks about Buddhism.
