Put OLAP to work in your data warehouse
Article Abstract:
On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is responsible for distributing and presenting business data to information consumers across the whole organization in a typical data warehouse strategy. Traditionally, management information systems generates the data warehouse before choosing at least one query or OLAP tools to connect the data and end users. However, a more desirable alternative requires starting with end-user needs and choosing an OLAP tool to create the application first or a proof-of-concept before developing the data warehouse that will support it. This approach is ideal for such financial operations as budgeting, management, reporting, profitability analysis and forecasting. The benefit of this user-centered approach is that it ensures that the data warehouse is supplied with needed reliable, easily accessible data. Moreover, it allows the immediate use of the financial applications.

Data warehouses, marts, metadata, OLAP/ROLAP, and data mining - a glossary
Article Abstract:
A data warehouse is a subject-centered, integrated, nonvolatile, time-flexible aggregation of data structured to assist management. Aside from data warehouses, there are other options for companies that want to collect data in a meaningful manner. Data mart and metadata are just two examples of tool for more localized application and more restricted content. Metadata includes warehouse data structures, transformation and integration logic and processes, the features of operational data, and the sources of the data. Reading the information incorporated in the warehouses are On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining. OLAP employs software that can facilitate dynamic multidimensional analysis while data mining makes use of artificial intelligence to make predictions.
