Quebec party drops 'distinct society' demand

Liberal Party members from the province of Quebec voted to recognize Quebec as the homeland of French culture, retreating from an earlier demand that Quebec be designated a distinct society. The change results from a pledge from the Liberal government to discuss Quebec's status in parliament.

Quebec narrowly rejects independence from Canada in controversial referendum

An Oct 30, 1995, referendum on Quebec independence was narrowly defeated by a vote of 50.6% to 49.4%. Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau, one of the main supporters of the referendum, announced his resignation shortly after the election. Lucien Bouchard is his likely successor.

Canada's Liberal Party candidates emerged winners in two parliamentary by-elections in Quebec on Feb. 13, 1995. The victories brought Brome-Missisquoi and Saint-Henri-Westmount under the control of the Liberal Party.
