Hatfield held onto to his chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee, after a move to censure him proved unsuccessful. The censure proceedings were initiated by younger Senate Republicans who were angry that Hatfield cast the decisive vote against the balanced-budget amendment.

GOP approves conservative platform
Article Abstract:
The Republican Party platform committee approved a conservative platform that called for abortion to be outlawed. The platform draft had referred to Pres George Bush's 1990 tax increase as a 'mistake,' but this was changed to read 'recessionary.'
