Microsoft, Lotus to post jumps in profit, Borland to show a decline, analysts say

Article Abstract:

Redmond, WA-based Microsoft Corp and Lotus Development Corp of Cambridge, MA are both expected to report increased earnings for the quarter ending Mar 31, 1992 over the same period in 1991. Analysts anticipate Microsoft's net income to rise by 41 percent to $175 million, on $680 million in revenue. Microsoft's strong product line, including the Windows operating system and its spreadsheet and word-processing software, is considered responsible for the strong showing. Lotus' rise in net income can be attributed to the continued success of its spreadsheet package, Lotus 1-2-3. The first version of Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, however, has met with criticism from reviewers. Lotus is expected to triple net income to $21.4 million on revenue of $225 million. Borland International Inc, however, is expected to announce a 29 percent drop in net income to $2 million, on $110 million in revenue. Other software companies show similarly mixed results.

Computer software & services

Article Abstract:

Consolidation is continuing in the computer software and services industry in 1995, and further acquisitions are expected in the future. Large revenues and earnings are also being posted for 1995, due to expansion in the US and overseas economies. Those seeking capital gains for the next three-to-five years will find stocks of interest, and many are timely, but conservative investors need to be selective.
