Officials of the National Academy of Sciences reported on Oct 15, 1992, that infectious diseases have again emerged as a major cause of death. The disease that reemerged include tuberculosis, measles and Lyme disease.

A colon screening technique called sigmoidoscopy may reduce the death rate from colon cancer by up to 70%. Sigmoidoscopy involves inserting a fiber optic monitor through the rectum and into the colon.
