Established Australian stocks have not performed well in 1999, but a number of other stocks have paid off well for perceptive investors. Surprises include Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd., which has been as high as $30.40, up from a 52-week low of $16.29; Qantas Airways Ltd., which rose to a $5.40 from a 52-week low of $2.27; and Smorgon Steel Group Ltd., which reached $2.67 from a 52-week low of $1.82.
