Were hits the jackpot, for the seventh time

Independent brokerage J.B. Were & Son has won Business Review Weekly's annual stockbroker poll for the seventh time in eight years. The Melbourne-based broker won 12 broking-house categories, out of a possible 19, and its analysts won 7 sector categories, out of a possible 20. Were's winning margin over runner-up Ord Minnett was a notable 134%. Overall results of the 1997 competition are presented.

Companies battle tight margins

Article Abstract:

Australia's top 1000 corporations experienced a drop in both core earnings and net profits in 1997, but economists saw rosier times ahead. The top 1000 had narrower operating margins and unusually high write-offs in a year of low inflation and strong international competition. Staff reductions and other cost-cutting frequently led the way to profits.

Hacker attackers at $1500 a day

Hackers are using increasingly sophisticated techniques, according to Eric Keser, principal of the e-risk consulting group of Ernst & Young. He indicates that the main hacking route is via vulnerable areas in operating systems and common software programs.
