What they do when they get your manuscript: a survey of Academy of Management reviewer practices
Article Abstract:
This study seeks to promote an understanding of the practices of reviewers for the Academy of Management's Journal (AMJ) and Review (AMR). A survey of reviewers for the two journals revealed that the practices of those reviewing empirical articles for AMJ varied little from the practices of those reviewing nonempirical articles for AMR. Factor analysis revealed three dimensions of significance identifying differences among reviewers' practices. We termed them thoroughness, guidance, and substance. Further analysis of indexes derived from those factors and their correlates provided insight into forces at work in reviewers as they participated in the review process. Respondents felt they employed a systemmatic approach to personnel management. Study results reveal room for improvement. Small firms are recommended to hire an outside consultant to establish professional personnel practices within the firm.

Personnel services in a new attire?
Article Abstract:
The European Association for Personnel Management (EAPM) commissioned a report in late 1990 into the future role of the personnel or human resource manager in Europe. An international research team has since been looking at a wide range of issues, and has questioned more than 1,500 practitioners in 15 European countries. Many respondents saw a new and emerging role for personnel or human resource managers, and the report concluded that there will continue to be a need for high quality personnel services and administration.
