Why product development teams need management accountants
Article Abstract:
Management accountants play a significant role in product development. They have the expertise to examine the relationship between cost and product design prior to production by providing important cost and financial data. Several trends have necessitated the inclusion of management accountants in product development teams, the most significant of which is the emergence of cross-functional product design teams. The growing roles and responsibilities of management accountants reflect their transition from mere statement preparers to decision-support experts who provide a detailed analysis of hard financial data and explain the implications of such data for decision making. The key is for management accountants to be more proactive, creative and flexible in analyzing cost and financial data to optimize product design.
