Will Barry Diller be a winner on the Web?
Article Abstract:
Media executive Barry Diller is planning an IPO for online entertainment site Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch. The electronic-commerce company was created by the merger of USA Network's Ticketmaster Online subsidiary with cyberspace city guides and maps provider CitySearch. Diller, the USA Networks chmn, envisions a single destination for users seeking information on restaurant and concert reviews as well as music and sports tickets. Ticketmaster, which analysts said has a market capitalization of between $700 million to $1 billion, may give Diller an edge against rival ventures organized by Microsoft, America Online and Knight-Ridder. Diller rejects criticism of gathering disparate media assets, predicting that television programming and direct selling will strengthen their relationship. Other plans for USA Networks's Internet expansion in 1999 include taking public its Internet Shopping Network subsidiary.

DVDs catch on (but don't junk the VCr yet)
Article Abstract:
Digital videodisks (DVD) are beginning to be accepted. DVDs, which are the same size as audio compact disks, are thought by many to be better than videocassettes. For one thing, DVDs deliver sharper pictures. Initially, video retailers and movie studios regarded DVD technology with suspicion, fearing harm to lucrative, well-established videocassette businesses. However, the videocassette market is now showing signs of maturity, and meanwhile, DVD is growing more rapidly than had been expected. An important step is scheduled for Sep 8, 1998, when Viacom Inc's Blockbuster unit will announce an arrangement for renting movies in DVD format. Blockbuster will also rent DVD players provided by Philips Electronics. DVD still has a significant technical obstacle to overcome. DVD players cannot record TV programs, and models that can do so are probably still several years away.
