A LITTLE PEP TALK TO SPICE UP EXPORTS

Article Abstract:

Pepper production in India is expected to be lower in 1998-99 at 80,000 tonnes. Exports from the country have been falling and in 1998 it was at 126,000 tonnes against 145,000 tonnes in 1997. Exports are likely to touch 136,000 tonnes in 1999. Despite Indian pepper having bright prospects in the global markets, it is danger of being edged out by newer entrants like Vietnam. China is also taking to pepper production in a big way. With more produce flooding the market, Indian farmers should be ready to accept a lower price than in preceding years. They can maximise their returns by adopting modern techniques of production. This includes the organic production of pepper which will fetch a higher price in international markets. Indian farmers can also work towards increasing productivity. (uh)(m)
