AHP ready to close Fen-Phen diet-drug chapter

Article Abstract:

American Home Products Corp. (AHP) has reached an agreement to pay as much as $3.75 billion (3.53 billion euros) in lawsuit settlements over its Redux and Pondimin diet drugs. The settlement would be the largest injury settlement ever in the pharmaceutical industry. Under the deal, AHP would provide $1.4 million in things ranging from drug refunds to payments for injuries.

Tyco agrees to take over Raychem; deal will cost U.S. company nearly $3 billion

Article Abstract:

Exeter, N.H.-based Tyco International Ltd. announced that it will acquire California-based Raychem Corp. for almost $3 billion in cash and stock. Tyco plans to take advantage of overlaps in manufacturing as one of the first steps after approval. It plans on saving about $160 million the first year and $225 million the second year.

Miniature pigs created for transplant

Biotransplant Inc. and Novartis AG have formed a joint venture in which they have created miniature pigs that are genetically altered. The pigs' organs will be used for human transplants.
