AUSTRIA: SCHOELLER-BLECKMANN OPTIMISTIC

Article Abstract:

Schoeller-Bleckmann Oilfield Equipment AG (SBOE) reports record order books of Sch 487mn. This follows a 50% fall in demand in 1999, when the company's turnover declined 19% to Sch 1.12bn. For year 2000 the company that provides drilling equipment mainly for the oil and gas industries expects a recovery of sales to at least the 1998 level. Without the acquisition of Godwin and the increase of stake in Knust, sales in 1999 would have declined by 34%. Both of the subsidiaries produce drill string technology. Profit on ordinary activities fell from Sch 1.29bn to Sch 676mn. The company has reacted by cutting the number of staff in the US and Austria from 656 to 519 in 1999. SBOE is considering diversification into fields such as aviation and defence technology.
