AUSTRIA: VA DONAWITZ PLANNING FURTHER INVESTMENT

Article Abstract:

VA Stahl is considering a further investment of Sch 400mn-500mn in its Donawitz mill. The decision on the modernisation of rail production in Donawitz, which was built 45 years ago, will depend on the development of the markets. This follows a Sch 2bn investment in the Donawitz mill, which made it the most advanced such plant worldwide. At the same time, the number of staff was reduced by 200 to 1,600 people. A decision on cooperation with Nucor of the US in the production of rails is expected within 3-4 weeks. The two companies are contemplating building a new greenfield factory for 120-metre rails. The annual output would be about 450,000 tonnes. In the long term, VA Stahl might launch similar projects in Asia in countries such as China and India. VA Stahl has extended its capabilities in the railway sector by taking a stake in VAE (formerly Voest-Alpine Eisenbahnsysteme) and buying a railway engineering company.

AUSTRIA: VA STAHL TO BUILD NEW STEEL MILL

Article Abstract:

According to chief executive Peter Strahammer, Voest-Alpine Stahl AG (VA Stahl) is to build a new compact steel mill in western Europe. The decision on the project is to be taken in the first half of 2000, and the mill would be completed within 18-24 months. The mill will produce crude flat steel. VA Stahl has an annual production capacity of 4.8mn tonnes, but it could sell 20-30% more if it had the capacity. The new mill will have a capacity of 700,000 to 1mn tonnes. It will serve the automotive and domestic appliance industries in western Europe. The new mill would free capacity at VA Stahl's Linz mill for the production of products with a higher value added input. Meanwhile, VA Stahl has definitely abandoned acquisition plans in eastern Europe.

POLAND: SPECULATION ABOUT VA STAHL INVESTMENT

Article Abstract:

VA Stahl AG is believed to be considering Szczecin as the location of the new compact mill planned by the Austrian Linz-based steel maker. San Giorgio di Nogaro in Italy was rejected due to logistics reasons. The Polish port has the benefit of being close to east European markets. VA Stahl is expected to take a decision on the steel and rolling mill by the end of year 2000. The project, the volume of which has been upgraded to EUR 800mn, would boost the production capacity of the group by 50%. Poland's demand for fine steel sheet in the next few years is estimated at 3.5mn tonnes, of which the bulk will go to the automotive industry.
