Accessible public signing: design of public wayfinding and signage, for people with and without disabilities, can be improved by following straightforward rules
Article Abstract:
Time spent during the early stages of building design can lead to improved signage suited to both the able bodied and the physically and visually disabled. The UK Sign Design Society is a group of professionals dedicated to good signage practice, and they believe signs should be an integral part of the environment or building and should be simple and understandable. There are also recommendations for public signage and good practice set out in the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 and Accessible Public Transport Infrastructure 1994 drawn up by the Cranfield Centre for Logistics and Transportation.

From labyrinth to legibility: Nearly 20 years after it was completed, London's Barbican Centre can still cause problems with wayfinding. Does the latest signage help?
Article Abstract:
The Barbican Centre in London is a frequently visited venue, but from its early days, wayfinding has been a problem. The problems have been partly alleviated with the colour and pattern coding of carpets, and the placement of conspicuous, well-lit landmarks. The Pentagram index/directory signs are the latest addition to the signage and wayfinding programme, however there is still a degree of confusion.
