Africa
Article Abstract:
Sub-Saharan Africa is likely to be affected by a further economic slowdown in 1998, and adverse weather linked to El Nino is likely to affect Eastern and Southern Africa, especially Zambia and Zimbabwe, in 1998. South Africa has developed trade links with Asia, but it has a range of export markets and this diversity should help mitigate the impact of the Asian financial crisis. North Africa will not be directly affected by the Asian crisis, though it will be indirectly affected through slower world growth and weaker markets for exports.

Africa
Article Abstract:
The South African economy is forecast to grow by 3% for 1996 with a small drop in 1997 due to personal debt, high interest rates and fiscal constraints. Algeria is benefiting from a rise in petroleum prices, and Egypt has potential for growth. Per capita income looks set to rise in sub-Saharan Africa. There has been a move to achieve macroeconomic stability which has helped boost growth, but there is concern that commitment to stabilization policies could weaken.
