Smog is a growing environmental and health concern in Southeast Asia, due touncontrolled forest fires and relentless industrialization. The World Health Organization recently issued health warnings, and environmentalists have been powerless in the region.

State and local government jobs have grown to 15.6 million, while federal government jobs have been reduced. Many local and state governments have maneuvered to preserve jobs, despite layoffs that were meant to trim budgets.
