An ideas mine: Scottish universities

Article Abstract:

Scottish universities are suddenly turning out scientists who want to profit from their research. Although Scotland has a rich history of academics, the universities have spun off few companies. Scotland is the third highest country in the world in quantity of scholarly material produced; its quality rating is even higher. Still, only 100 companies and 2,000 jobs have resulted from the research. Economic development agency Scottish Enterprise is attempting to improve those numbers by promoting cooperation between universities and industry. In 1997, the spin-off rate was 15 a year.
