An independence beyond their ken
Article Abstract:
Ken Livingstone is a British politician who aims to become mayor of London, England. He is in the ruling Labor Party, but the leadership is not keen on his becoming mayor. Prime minister, Tony Blair, has stated that he aims to prevent Livingstone from becoming mayor, though he has yet to assess how this should be achieved. Livingstone's views on transportation in London. England, are sensible, but are opposed by the party leadership. Attempts have been made to rig candidate selection so that Livingstone does not become the party's candidate, though he is popular. The case raises questions about the prime minister's commitment to local democracy and devolution.

John Prescott's calming influence
Article Abstract:
British deputy prime minister, John Prescott, has been attacked by the press, and is seen as vulnerable. He is blamed for problems with Britain's transportation system, which the government argues have arisen from the neglect of the previous administration. The Treasury has not provided the funds that Prescott needs, and he will have to take decisions that some voters will not like, in order to tackle Britain's transportation problems. Prescott has also antagonized some of those in central government, and some aspects of the philosophy of prime minister, Tony Blair.
