Still on their feet
Article Abstract:
Eight Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) members who surrendered to Turkish police as an act of peace have been imprisoned, while a Kurdish singer has been arrested for singing Kurdish love songs at a concert. The PKK aims to show it is serious about peace, and the arrested leader, Abdullah Ocalan, is appealing against a sentence of death. Kurdish rebels are still reluctant to agree to an unconditional surrender. There is a need to change Turkey's constitution, and Turkey may have to tackle human rights issues in order to gain membership of the European Union (EU).

Is it adieu to Ataturk?
Article Abstract:
Turkey has been recognized as a candidate to join the European Union (EU) and this is likely to mean changes in Turkey. These include changes to the constitution, and greater accountability for the military to civilian politicians. There is concern that the military has helped to prevent an Islamic fundamentalist takeover, so changes may involve risks. Kurds generally see EU candidacy in a positive light. Economic reform may also be promoted by the candidacy.
