Asia's bond scene gets cheers; stable U.S. rate expectations keep mood bright
Article Abstract:
Asian bond markets face bright prospects, owing to the favorable interest rate environment and a healthy level of fixed income. Asian economies with currencies linked to the dollar are seen to benefit from stable US interest rates, which are predicted to hold up through early 1997. The bond markets of Australia and New Zealand are particularly giving good showings, while Indonesia is offering high-yields on fixed-income instruments. The region's equity markets, however, have performed poorly in the past few months, but are foreseen to improve in 1997.

Article Abstract:
London Stock Exchange-listed Asia Healthcare Trust (AHT) is a $25 million closed-end fund that invests in Asian health-care stocks. Unlike other equity funds, AHT invests in both listed and unlisted firms. This strategy allows the fund to take advantage of opportunities offered by unlisted start-up healthcare projects. AHT manager Christine Pillsbury foresees a boom in the Asian private health-care industry due to the region's changing demographics.
