Austria: EU membership opens the floodgates

Article Abstract:

Austria became a member of the European Union (EU) at the start of 1995, and the agricultural sector became exposed to competition. This also applies to textiles and some other sectors which had enjoyed some protection or which are state monopolies. Austria has attractions for companies involved in acquisitions and these include a well-trained labor force, and a high-margin retail industry. Margins in banking tend to be low due to overbanking. Privatizations are likely and these may also present opportunities.

Austria

Article Abstract:

There is only limited merger and acquisition activity in Austria, and there are few buyout opportunities. However, there has been some restructuring and consolidation in the retail sector since spring 1998, and deals have also taken place in areas including banking and engineering. The Viennese Stock Exchange is linking with the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt, Germany, to form an Eastern Europe Exchange, which will open in the year 2000 with around 100 securities.
