The recent rejection of the reappointment of Viroj Nualkhair as the president of the state-run Krung Thai Bank by the Bank of ThailandEs governor Pridiyathorn Devakula is seen being interpreted as a crossing of swords by Pridiyathorn with the Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Viroj is close to key members of ThaksinEs cabinet and has acted on governmentEs orders to lend substantial funds from 2002 through 2003, which the central bank alleges are bad debts of Krung Thai.

Article Abstract:

Siam Strip Mill (SSM) owes its creditors around $380 million, mainly to Sumitomo Corp., Itochu Corp., and Citibank's Tokyo branch. In 2000, the banks set up a debt restructuring that has been sidetracked by a case filed by Siam Power Generation against SSM. Recent federal actions in Malaysia are also impacting the debt restructuring plan.

Thailand's National Human Rights Commission has gathered testimony from suspected militants of abuses carried out by police officials. Five Muslim suspects detained in the Southern Thailand make allegations of being hung, forced to stand on a chair for days, submitted to electric shocks, and being beaten and urinated upon.
