Article Abstract:
The UK's system of unemployment benefits and income assistance for the poor is expensive and a disincentive to the unemployed. It needs to be overhauled, with high-paying first-year unemployment benefits eliminated. More effort should go into education assisting people in finding jobs.

The incomes of poor people in Britain decreased during the 1980s, despite claims by politicians that wealth increased among all people. Poverty is contributing to social problems such as burglary and theft, which occurs more frequently than in the US.
