It is predicted the UK bingo industry will be worth some 1,650 million pounds sterling by 2003. Total gross revenue for bingo clubs, in 1998, was 1,327 million pounds sterling. Only 10% of the adult UK population played bingo compared to 60% who played the National Lottery in Mar 1999. Admission to bingo clubs had fallen by 10% between 1983-1998. The Rank Group PLC had a 28.9% share of admissions in May 1998, with a turnover for its bingo halls, in 1998, of around 232 million pounds sterling. Bingo played at a licensed club is most popular with women aged between 20-34 years and 45-54 years.

Visiting the cinema is the most rapidly expanding leisure activity in the entertainment sector in the United Kingdom, with around 355 million pounds sterling spent on cinema admissions in 1994 compared with 136 million in 1985. Consumer spending on eating out is expected to reach nearly 16 billion pounds sterling by end-1995 compared with 7.8 billion pounds sterling in 1984. Around 5.7 billion pounds sterling will be spent on newspapers, magazines and books in 1995. Trends in leisure activity expenditure are examined.
