Article Abstract:
The French far right claims to be patriotic, yet many descendants of North Africans have been born in France, and are French. France has had a policy of making immigrants French, so there is little space for people who are not foreign or French. This is in contrast to the US, where membership of two cultures is recognized. The French national soccer team included different kinds of French men in 1998, when France won the world cup. Yet there is still tension when unemployed white men blame their plight on the children of immigrants.

Article Abstract:
France's prime minister, Lionel Jospin, has decided to support some clauses in the European Charter on Minority and Regional Languages, and this has provoked criticism from French nationalists who fear competition from local dialects. Regional langiages include Catalan, Breton and Basque. The nationalists also oppose strong ties with other European countries, for example through European monetary union. The French constitution has to be changed to allow regional languages more recognition, and the president opposes this.

Article Abstract:
Corsica has 256,000 inhabitants and depends on tourists from the French mainland, but also resents French attitudes toward Corsicans. Violence is used by a minority to show their frustration. There is concern about the representative of France in Corsica, who denies having ordered police to burn an illegal restaurant, and about lack of recognition for the language, Corsican. Nationalism and banditry can be confused, since bandits may represent themselves as nationalists.
