Brazil's (pre) occupying housing problem
Article Abstract:
Housing shortages have meant that squatting has become more common in Brazil. Mass invasions of large buildings have been carried out by people who previously lived in slum tenements or on the streets. The housing shortage was improving until 1996, when it started to worsen again. Prestige public housing schemes have tended to be too expensive for the inhabitants, and funds would be better spent on improving conditions in shanty towns. They can be givem street lighting, running water and sewerage. Schemes involving residents themselves carrying out work have been the most successful.

Brazil's backlands classic
Article Abstract:
'Os Sertoes' contains major inaccuracies but is still a fascinating account of the rebellion in the state of Bahia that resulted in a protracted war with the Brazilian federal republic. Da Cunha misrepresents rebel leader Antonio Conselheiro but also sees the rebellion as central to Brazilian nationality.
