Breaking the rules

Article Abstract:

IBM hopes to challenge the Taiwanese original equipment-manufacturing companies (OEM) that dominate the world market for computer mother-boards. Mother-boards, a basic part of personal computers, are fiberglass rectangles with rows of empty sockets linked by silk-screened filigrees of copper and silver. First International Computer and about 150 other Taiwanese OEM manufacturers are expected to produce $1 billion worth of mother-boards in 1993. IBM wants to expand its market share by making its manufacturing facilities available so that the Taiwanese firms can focus on design.

American samurai: IBM Japan struggles to restructure

Article Abstract:

IBM Japan hopes that reorganization and increased market share will overcome the effects of recession and the increased use of networked computer systems. Due to these factors the company's revenue in 1992 was down 1.4% from 1991 while net income was down 45%. However, the Japanese computer industry in general endured losses in 1992. IBM Japan's planners believe they can capitalize on the situation by expanding into new areas, notably software and services.
