Budget wares on competitive display

Article Abstract:

Thirty architects contribute to an exhibition of small contracts. The works are all priced under 50,000 pounds sterling. Each practice has used the display space differently, some with photographs and some with drawings. Many are pretentious and it is difficult to identify the intention of the exhibition. It may be seen as a sign of hard times as some of the exhibitors would have been unlikely to have done such small jobs in the 1980s.

Sweet clarity

Article Abstract:

Architect firm Bennetts Associates designed and oversaw the construction of a new facility for British Telecom in Scotland. Alexander Graham Bell House has been built at Edinburgh Park, Scotland and is a prime example of a building which has been designed with functionality and appearance in mind. A large glass atrium doubles as a staff retreat, while copious amounts of glass and steel gives the building a light and airy feeling.

On the crest of a wave. Quentin Newark, the designer of the new and much-derided RIBA logo, shrugs off criticism. He believes that will be short-lived and for that, for the first time, the institute has a consistent identity across all its activities

Article Abstract:

Quentin Newark is the designer of the new crest logo for RIBA. Some members have taken exception to the design of the crest, which is only a small part of the group's new corporate identity. According to Newark, criticism follows any such redesign and similar complaints were voiced when the crest was changed in 1931 and 1961.
