Japan's latest mega-bank

Article Abstract:

The Japanese banking sector has warmly welcomed plans to merger Sukura Bank and Sumitomo Bank, although Western critics claim the two banks have debt problems which could undermine the success of the deal. The new bank will become the world's second largest bank, with assets of $925 billion. The highest value proposed deal in the Asian region during October 1999 is the $6,398 million takeover Fujian Mobile (China) by China Telecom Hong Kong Ltd.

Khmer Rouge could fall after latest stumble

Article Abstract:

Cambodia's long-suffering people may finally return to normal life as the Maoist revolutionary movement Khmer Rouge appears to dissolve as a group due to several reasons. In Jun. 1996, rumors spread that the movement's chief died of malaria in his camp on the Thai-Cambodian border. In spite of the rumors deemed as unconfirmed, new reports of leadership rifts and mass defections further indicate that the guerrilla group has reached its end.
