Cyprus has been divided into Greek and Turkish sections since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied the top half after a coup in Greece. The results of the recent presidential election on the island raises hope for reunification negotiations as well as the prospect for European Union membership.

Talks between Turks and Greeks on the Cyprus issue have made progress but there still remains key areas of disagreement. A proposal to turn the island into a bi-zonal federation was rejected by Turkish leader Rauf Denktash, and now the matter could be decided by the UN Security Council.
